Rangers in Somalia were primarily performing direct-action raids and joint special operations tasks. In the 1990s missions, they operated as part of a dedicated special operations task force, conducting high-risk, precision missions aimed at disrupting hostile networks, seizing weapons caches, and capturing or neutralizing key targets, often in concert with other SOF units and conventional forces. This approach supported the broader humanitarian effort by stabilizing areas and protecting relief efforts, rather than engaging in broad political-military campaigns or mass conventional warfare. They also did not focus on naval escorts, which were outside the Army Rangers’ typical role, nor did their missions center on humanitarian aid alone.
